Students learned about Surrealism and Jerry Uelsmann, the pioneer of "photo montage". They then created their own surrealist collages using Pixlr.
Students have been learning to use an online photo editing program called Pixlr to enhance their images and have just started to learn how to put more than one image together to create a composite photo. In class, we discussed good design elements and looked at various magazine covers. Students were challeneged with creating their own magazine the idea and layout had to be original and it had to include: A title, an image, a barcode, two short sentences about what is inside of the magazine, a date and a price. We then looked at the covers together and critiqued each others work.
Students learned about the Japanese aesthetic called "Wabi Sabi". Wabi Sabi is all about the impermanence of life and nature, everything is impermanent, imperfect and incomplete. Students were challenged to find typically ugly things outside in nature and zoom in to try to capture texture and unity to make them seem "beautiful" or at least more interesting to look at. Students could not photograph anything that was further than an arms length away from their cameras, they were challenged to get close, to look at things typically overlooked.
Students in Photography learned how to adjust the shutter speed, aperture and ISO on a DSLR camera in class to create the illusion of movement. By slowing down the shutter speed to 10 seconds on a camera, students created "light paintings" using the flashlights on their phones in a dark room. They were able to show the actual movement of the light. Students worked collaboratively to create these images through trial and error.
Welcome back TMHS Photography students! Photography at TMHS is a CCP course through QVCC. This is a college credit course, and students will be expected to give a college course effort. Students will create s blog to post their final images as well as create a portfolio of images to hand in at the end of the semester fas part of the final exam. Each photo project will teach students about the essential elements of photography, how to look at photos and how to compose a photograph. Students will learn the history of photography, how it has changes the world and how they can use it as a tool to effect change. Students will begin with learning about good composition by studying various photographs. We will then talk about modern photography tools, such as cell phones, computers etc and compare the notion of a "selfie" with a "self portrait"
Students in Photography have just taken photos for the first time this semester. Students were asked to use the props around the room, and real and artificial light to create interesting compositions showing that they understand lighting and good composing by way of the rule of thirds and cross sectional. This was the first time students used cameras in class after studying the basic elements of photography. Students were asked to print two of their best images and reflect on what they thought was successful, and what was not and what they could improve on considering the requirements of the assignment. STAY TUNED FOR IMAGES AND LESSON PLAN
