Students began Art 2 by learning about Color Theory. This lesson was meant to refresh students minds on the basic knowledge of color mixing that they learned in Art 1. I took the theory one step further by teaching students about mixing tints and shades. A Mandala is a symmetrical design created by Tibetan Monks, usually with colored sand, to represent the impermanence of life. Monks spend weeks creating intricate designs by hand and at the end of the process, simply wipe the sand away into containers which they throw into a stream that will carry the sand across the world. Students watched a video of the Monks creating these Mandalas and then created a Mandala design of their own. They combined their design with a color wheel showing tints and shades of each color.
