Students in Art 1 reviewed one and two point perspective in their sketchbooks. Then, using masking tape and the large doors and walls in the art room, students worked in groups to create a city scene using One or Two point perspective. They had to include 4-6 buildings with windows and a road. After that, students created a painting of birch trees in the summer from a worms eye view, (looking up) we focused on making all of the trees go toward the vanishing point, creating texture using non traditional tools and mixing colors.
Students in Art 1 learned about using the grid method to scale up an image in proportion. We were also learning about color theory and pattern which inspired the backgrounds for their self portraits. I edited the images in a photo editing program to create a stencil style image. The students then worked on their backgrounds, and then drew their faces using a grid onto their patterned paper. They then painted the stencil part black. I think they came out great! The students struggled a bit with the concept of scaling but they got it with some practice.
