Students were introduces to printmaking and used hard linoleum blocks to create an image from nature. They created many different surfaces to print on and learned about printmaking as a process and as a mass production technique.
Students chose 3 popular logos from todays culture to recreate. They cropped them to show how iconic the logos are and created a triptych paintings.
Students were introduced to the concept of a still life and got to choose 3-5 items that represented them to bring in to include in their own set up. Students were also introduced to many new mediums and chose which medium or material to use to create two different still lifes.
Students began Art 2 by learning about Color Theory. This lesson was meant to refresh students minds on the basic knowledge of color mixing that they learned in Art 1. I took the theory one step further by teaching students about mixing tints and shades. A Mandala is a symmetrical design created by Tibetan Monks, usually with colored sand, to represent the impermanence of life. Monks spend weeks creating intricate designs by hand and at the end of the process, simply wipe the sand away into containers which they throw into a stream that will carry the sand across the world. Students watched a video of the Monks creating these Mandalas and then created a Mandala design of their own. They combined their design with a color wheel showing tints and shades of each color.
Welcome back TMHS students! Students in art 2 will begin this year by delving deeper into the skills and techniques they learned in Art 1. We will begin Art 2 with learning about Value and Symmetry. Students will use paint to create a 10 point value scale in black and white and one in a color of their choice. These color mixing skills are essential to students looking to pursue art past this course and throughout the rest of the course. A new component to all art classes this year is Sketchbooks. All students will keep a sketchbook in class to keep track of all activities, notes, papers, thumbnail sketches and various other tasks. This is a great way for the student to see their growth from the beginning to the end of the semester. I will post images of the students first projects, "Symmetry Vases" once class gets underway!
Students in Art 2 are studying value and using charcoal as a drawing medium. Creating value studies in charcoal allows for a looseness and easy manipulation of the medium to create dramatic and bold compositions. Students are directly observing a knotted piece of fabric while considering composition and form. This is the first piece of observational work students are doing in this course and allows for creative problem solving and thinking skills. This lesson also allows for many possible outcomes as the student has his or her choice of composition and scale. STAY TUNED FOR STUDENT WORK AND LESSON PLAN
