Students in Art 1 reviewed one and two point perspective in their sketchbooks. Then, using masking tape and the large doors and walls in the art room, students worked in groups to create a city scene using One or Two point perspective. They had to include 4-6 buildings with windows and a road. After that, students created a painting of birch trees in the summer from a worms eye view, (looking up) we focused on making all of the trees go toward the vanishing point, creating texture using non traditional tools and mixing colors.
Students in Art 1 learned about using the grid method to scale up an image in proportion. We were also learning about color theory and pattern which inspired the backgrounds for their self portraits. I edited the images in a photo editing program to create a stencil style image. The students then worked on their backgrounds, and then drew their faces using a grid onto their patterned paper. They then painted the stencil part black. I think they came out great! The students struggled a bit with the concept of scaling but they got it with some practice.
Students learned about color theory and how to draw a contour line from long at an object. Students brought in 3 or 5 objects that represented them to draw using contour line. They then made a grid on their paper and used warm and cool color pairs to fill in each section.
Students were introduced to the different drawing pencils used in art and had to "finish their face" by matching the values and using creativity to complete the background of their image.
For the first project of the semester, students created Zentangles. This was a chance for students to learn about value, color and pattern. Students made color wheels in their sketchbooks using only primary colors to make all of the colors on the wheel. Students drew a "string" that connected back to the border on their page and then began to fill in each spot with something different to create a unique design. This is a great project to assess student knowledge and interest at the beginning of a class.
Welcome back TMHS students! Art 1 will be beginning this year by learning about Contour lines, color theory and value, as they are essential elements to any art-making experience. We will begin this semester by assessing what Art 1 students already know about art, and can recall from past art classes. We will also be adding a new component to all art classes, keeping a sketchbook! In the past, students would be responsible for keeping track of papers and small activity sheets in their cubbies. Keeping a sketchbook is a great way to keep everything in one place and to reflect on growth throughout the semester. Various assignments will be completed in our sketchbooks that will guide and reinforce the essential skills and techniques that are being practiced for major projects. Can't wait to begin! I will post pictures of our first project in a couple of weeks when students begin their "Crazy Contour Portraits"
"Learning to let go should be learned before learning to get. Life should be touched, not strangled. You’ve got to relax, let it happen at times, and at others move forward with it." -Ray Bradbury Art 1 is beginning a Zentangle project. If you don't know what a Zentangle is, look at the examples below. They are square designs, usually in black and white, meant to free and relax the mind. We studied the basics of Color Theory and Color Mixing along with Pattern and Value (some of the Elements and Principles of Design) The Zentangle that students will create will utilize all of the knowledge of these Elements of art they've learned and studied so far. This project will also allow students to appreciate attention to detail and consider every small part of their artwork. Every piece must work together harmoniously. *STAY TUNED FOR IMAGES OF STUDENT WORK AND LESSON PLAN*
